The annual mud festival in Boryeong attracts about 2 million people to the city of a little more than 100,000 located about 190 km (120 miles) southwest of Seoul. Families, couples, college kids and foreign workers and tourists converge on the city to revel in the mud, which locals say has cleansing and healing powers.
"The mud makes people friendly," said Angela Sharp, a U.S. Air Force service member stationed in South Korea who is one of the tens of thousands of foreigners attending the festivities.
