Recon — Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026

Data That Stays on Your Device

All your core data — assignments, locations, gear inventory, field log entries, expenses, client records, packing lists, shot lists, briefings, location intel, pitches, and photos — is stored locally on your device as files. Recon has no server, no cloud sync, and no account system. Your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly use one of the features described below, or manually export a backup.

Because all data is stored locally, deleting the Recon app from your device deletes all app data. There is nothing stored on our servers to request deletion of, because we have no servers.

How and When Data Leaves Your Device

Recon only transmits data when you actively initiate a request. No data is sent in the background, passively, or without your action.

Anthropic (Claude API)

When you use any of Recon's AI-powered features — including the Field Assistant, Scout Location, Pitch, shot list generation, briefing generation, or photo analysis — your message and relevant context (such as assignment details, location information, or gear lists) are sent to Anthropic's Claude API (api.anthropic.com) for processing.

What Anthropic does with this data: Anthropic's API is governed by their Commercial Terms. API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted within 30 days and are never used for model training. Anthropic does not sell API customer data to third parties. For full details, see Anthropic's privacy policy at anthropic.com/privacy.

OpenWeather

When weather data is displayed, your GPS coordinates are sent to the OpenWeather API (api.openweathermap.org) to retrieve current conditions and forecasts.

What OpenWeather does with this data: According to OpenWeather's privacy policy, they do not collect or store any parameters from API requests, including locations, coordinates, city names, IP addresses, or user agent information. OpenWeather tracks only API usage volume (number of requests per API key). No personally identifiable information beyond what is required to fulfill the weather request is collected. For full details, see OpenWeather's privacy policy at openweather.co.uk/privacy-policy.

Open-Meteo

Recon uses the Open-Meteo API (api.open-meteo.com) to fetch elevation data and marine forecasts. Only GPS coordinates are sent. Open-Meteo is a free, open-source weather API that does not require authentication. According to Open-Meteo's terms, individual API log files are removed after 90 days, and only aggregated usage data (such as number of API calls per day) is retained. For full details, see open-meteo.com/en/terms.

Apple Services

Recon uses Apple's built-in MapKit for maps and location search, and CoreLocation for GPS positioning. These services are processed on-device or through Apple's infrastructure under Apple's privacy policy. No data from these services is forwarded to other third parties by Recon.

Third-Party Data Protection

Each third-party service that receives data from Recon operates under its own privacy policy and is committed to protecting user data. Anthropic does not use API data for training and deletes it within 30 days. OpenWeather does not store API request parameters. Open-Meteo removes individual logs after 90 days. Links to each provider's privacy policy are included above so you can review their commitments directly.

API Key Storage

Your Anthropic and OpenWeather API keys are stored in the iOS Keychain, which provides hardware-backed encryption. Keys are never included in device backups, never synced to iCloud, and are only transmitted directly to their respective API services over encrypted HTTPS connections.

No Tracking, No Analytics, No Ads

Recon does not include any analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, or user tracking. We do not collect usage data, crash reports, or device identifiers. We do not sell, share, or monetize any of your data.

Your Controls

  • AI consent: You can revoke consent for all AI features at any time in Settings → Privacy. When disabled, the Field Assistant, Scout Location, Pitch, shot list generation, briefing generation, and photo analysis are turned off. All other app features continue to work fully.

  • Data deletion: Because all data is stored locally on your device, deleting the Recon app removes all your data. There is no account to close and no server-side data to request deletion of.

  • Data export: You can export your data at any time using the backup feature in Settings.

Children's Privacy

Recon is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

If we update this privacy policy, the revised version will be posted here and the "Last updated" date will be changed. Continued use of Recon after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
